The United States Mint presents the American Gold Buffalo Proof coin in a matte hardwood box with a leather inlay to contain the coin. The design of the American Gold Buffalo coin is derived from the Type I Buffalo Nickel. The Buffalo Nickel design was created by James Earl Fraser in 1913, when the nation's main coins were being revamped to give each coin a distinctly American appeal. Fraser's design captured the spirit of the Great Plains and the West.

The obverse of the 2019-W 1 oz. Proof Gold Buffalo coin features an image of a Native American tribal chief. The Native American image on the right here was embossed by Fraser using facial features of early 20th century tribal chiefs ^.  It also features the word "Liberty," the "F" for Fraser's last name, and the date mark "2019." You'll also see the West Point Mint's "W" mint mark on this side of the coin.

The reverse of the 2019 American Gold Buffalo Proof coin features a left-side view of an American bison standing on a mound of dirt. The design was inspired by Black ^Diamond, a resident bison at New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century  .
